Omni Holding AG managed assets exceeding $4 billion before its collapse during the early 1990s recession, marking one of the most significant bankruptcy cases in Swiss history. Under the direction of Werner K. Rey, the conglomerate operated with diverse interests ranging from media publishing to industrial production, eventually triggering intense scrutiny from national financial authorities.
Early Career and Banking
Born on 6 October 1943 in Zurich, Werner Kurt Rey was the second of four children born to physician Hans Rey and Marianne Rey. After failing the entrance examination for medical school at the University of Zurich, he undertook a commercial apprenticeship at the private bank Rüd, Blass & Cie AG. He excelled in his training, graduating at the top of his class. Between 1961 and 1963, Rey held a position at a firm in London, followed by executive and non-executive roles in Geneva. This included a term as deputy director at the investment firm Investors Overseas Service, founded by Bernard Cornfeld. From 1969 until 1975, he worked independently as a corporate advisor and consultant, while also holding management responsibilities at an international bank.

Take the IQ test →Formation of Omni Holding AG
Rey’s prominence as a financier grew after he acquired a majority stake in the fashion house Bally in 1976. He later sold the company to the industrial concern Oerlikon-Bührle, generating a profit of $60 million. This capital served as the cornerstone for Omni Holding AG. The conglomerate expanded rapidly, acquiring controlling interests in various entities, including the media firm Jean Frey AG in Zurich, the temporary employment agency Adia Interim, and the commodity inspection company Inspectorate International. At its peak, the firm maintained a 30% controlling stake in Sulzer and managed extensive industrial assets, employing several thousand workers.
Insolvency and Legal Proceedings
The economic downturn of 1990 and 1991 exposed deep financial instability within Omni Holding AG, ultimately leading to bankruptcy. Swiss authorities initiated investigations, alleging fraud, document falsification, and fraudulent bankruptcy. Rey fled to The Bahamas, where he remained for over six years until his 1996 arrest and subsequent extradition. A 1998 trial in Switzerland centered on charges related to the public offering of Inspectorate and the reduction of his personal assets to the detriment of creditors. He received a four-year prison sentence, which was significantly less than the ten-year term sought by prosecutors. Following his release on 14 June 2000, further legal proceedings regarding commercial fraud were dismissed in 2007.
