Early Career and International Debut
Kidane secured her first international title at the 1999 IAAF World Cross Country Championships by winning the junior race. Her Olympic debut occurred at the 2000 Sydney Games, where she placed seventh in the 5000 metres. By 2002, her domestic profile rose with a victory at the Great Ethiopian Run, followed by a second-place finish in the short race at the 2002 IAAF World Cross Country Championships.

The 2003 season marked a significant peak in her career. After winning the Antrim International Cross Country, she claimed the women's long race title at the 2003 IAAF World Cross Country Championships. She also earned a silver medal in the 10,000 metres at the 2003 All-Africa Games. At the 2004 Athens Olympics, she achieved a fourth-place finish, adding to a consistent record that included bronze and fourth-place finishes in the long and short races at the 2004 IAAF World Cross Country Championships.
Transition to Road Racing and Marathon
Following a break, Kidane returned to international competition at the 2010 IAAF World Cross Country Championships. She expanded her focus to the road circuit, winning the 2010 Great Manchester Run in 32:31. In 2011, she debuted at the marathon distance during the Boston Marathon, finishing seventh with a time of 2:26:15. Her later career included a fourth-place finish in the 10,000 metres at the 2012 London Olympics.
