Early Development
Born in 1992 in Cape Town, the athlete spent his childhood moving between various locations, eventually residing in Bloemfontein by 2005. He attended Grey College and later enrolled at the University of the Free State to pursue marketing studies. Following a breakthrough at the 2011 South African Athletics Championships, where he claimed the 200 metres title, he gradually shifted focus toward the 400 metres. By 2013, he secured his first international medal as part of the South African relay team at the Summer Universiade. His progression continued in 2014, when he set a new national record of 44.38 seconds, surpassing previous marks held by Arnaud Malherbe and Hendrick Mokganyetsi.
Record-Breaking Feats
The year 2015 marked a significant turning point, as he achieved a sub-44-second run of 43.96 at the Meeting Areva. He followed this with a 200 metres time of 19.94 seconds, becoming the second man to break both 20 seconds and 44 seconds in those respective distances. By 2016, he became the first person to record sub-10, sub-20, and sub-44 times across the 100, 200, and 400 metres.
Championship Success and Injury
At the 2017 World Championships in London, he successfully defended his 400 metres title and added a silver medal in the 200 metres, marking him as the first South African to win two individual sprint medals at a single meet. Later that year, he tore his anterior cruciate ligament during a celebrity rugby match in Cape Town, leading to an extensive period of rehabilitation through 2018.
