Wasif Ali Wasif

Pakistani scholar (1929–1993)

Malik Muhammad Wasif, widely recognized by the pen-name Wasif Ali Wasif, authored approximately 40 books that synthesized his work as a philosopher, poet, and teacher. Born on 15 January 1929 in Khushab, Punjab, he operated within the cultural landscape of Pakistan, producing aphorisms and essays that remained influential long after his death on 18 January 1993.

Early Education and Academic Background

Born to Malik Muhammed Arif of the Awan clan, Wasif received initial religious instruction from his father. He matriculated from Government High School Khushab in 1944. His academic journey continued in Jhang, where he attended the Government Degree College. After moving to Lahore, he secured an MSc in Mathematics from Government Islamia College Civil Lines and an MA in English from Government College, Lahore. During these years, he participated in hockey and contributed to the college magazine, Ravi.

Professional Trajectory

In 1954, Wasif achieved success in the Punjab Civil Service examination. Despite this potential path into civil administration, he elected to pursue a career in education. Following brief roles in private institutions, he established the Lahore College for English near Anarkali in 1958. His social and intellectual network during this period included prominent figures such as Qudratullah Shahab, Ashfaq Ahmed, and Hanif Ramay.

Literary Output and Publication

Wasif produced a substantial body of work, much of which originated as columns in Urdu newspapers, public lectures, or speeches. His literary catalog includes poetry collections like Shab Chiragh (1978) and works of aphorism such as Kiran Kiran Sooraj (1983). His essays were published in volumes including Dil Darya Sumandar (1987) and Qatra Qatra Qulzum (1989). Posthumously, many of his works were translated into English, including The Beaming Soul, Ocean in Drop, and The Truth Unveiled.

The Guftgoo Series

A significant portion of his intellectual legacy is preserved in the Guftgoo series. Comprising 30 volumes, this collection focuses on dialogues, interviews, and question-and-answer sessions. These volumes provide a detailed record of his public engagements and philosophical exchanges, which have been organized into several compiled volumes starting from 2015.
