The 3,000 pages of confidential documents stolen from World Bank headquarters in the early 1980s served as the foundation for Walden Bello’s career as a political economist. These materials linked international financial institutions to the administration of Ferdinand Marcos, catalyzing a transition toward the 1986 People Power Revolution that ultimately shaped his long-standing focus on systemic economic critique.
Academic and Activist Foundations
Born on November 11, 1945, in Cardona, Rizal, Bello received his early education at the Ateneo de Manila University, where he served as editor-in-chief of The GUIDON. He later pursued graduate studies at Princeton University. His transition to radical activism occurred in the United States, prompted by his participation in the anti-war movement and the occupation of the Woodrow Wilson Center. His research into socialist models led him to Chile, but the 1972 declaration of martial law in the Philippines prevented his return, as his passport was revoked.

In August 2022, he was arrested at his Quezon City home following a cyberlibel indictment filed by a former Davao City information officer. Detained at Camp Karingal, he was released on bail the following day. By January 2023, he formally refused to enter a plea to the charge, leading a court to enter a plea of not guilty on his behalf.
