Competitive Record and Tournament Success
Gashimov established his reputation through consistent performances at prestigious international events. In 2005, he secured victory at the Acropolis International in Athens. He dominated the Cappelle-la-Grande open by tying for first place in 2007 and claiming the title outright via tie-breaks in 2008. Furthermore, he triumphed at the Reggio Emilia invitation tournament during the 2010–11 season, narrowly surpassing Francisco Vallejo Pons.

As a representative of Azerbaijan, Gashimov participated in multiple Chess Olympiads, including the 2002, 2004, 2006, and 2008 iterations. His contributions were vital to the national squad's success at the European Team Chess Championship in Novi Sad in 2009, where the team earned a gold medal. This followed a bronze medal finish in 2007. His teammates during these efforts included Shakhriyar Mamedyarov, Teimour Radjabov, Rauf Mammadov, and Gadir Guseinov.
Health Challenges and Career Conclusion
In February 2000, Gashimov fell ill and received a diagnosis of epilepsy, followed shortly by the discovery of a brain tumor. Despite these medical obstacles, he continued to compete at a high level until his final appearance at the Tata Steel Chess Tournament in January 2012. He eventually sought medical care in Heidelberg, Germany, where he died on 11 January 2014. He was buried at the II Alley of Honor in Baku.
Professional Legacy and Remembrance
The international chess community honored Gashimov’s impact following his death. President Ilham Aliyev cited his significant contributions to the Azerbaijani sports school. In April 2014, the first Gashimov Memorial tournament took place in Şəmkir, attracting top-tier grandmasters. A monument commemorating his life was unveiled at his gravesite in Baku on 24 July 2014, the anniversary of his birth.
