In 1992, he transitioned into directing, helming plays such as Star Time on Local Time and Passion for Bumbarash. By 2018, he assumed the role of artistic director at the Oleg Tabakov Theatre.
Film and Global Recognition
His cinematic breakthrough arrived in the 1990s with roles in Limit and Moscow Nights. He gained international prominence with appearances in Hollywood productions like the 2011 film Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol. Domestically, his work included the sports drama Going Vertical and the historical series Liquidation, while his directorial output includes the 2004 film Daddy.
Political Engagement and Legal Standing
A member of the United Russia party, Mashkov has publicly supported the Russian invasion of Ukraine and Vladimir Putin, including appearances at pro-Kremlin rallies. Following these actions, the European Union imposed sanctions on him in 2022. Additionally, a Ukrainian court sentenced him in absentia to ten years in prison in 2024 for war propaganda, leading to the confiscation of his assets in Odesa.
