Merloni Elettrodomestici, the appliance firm established by Vittorio Merloni in 1975, eventually grew into one of the primary manufacturers and distributors of household goods across Europe. Through his strategic leadership, the enterprise navigated the shift from regional Italian manufacturing to a multinational operation, eventually achieving a listing on the Milan stock exchange by 1987.
Early Career and Education
Born in Fabriano in 1933, Merloni was the son of Aristide Merloni. He pursued higher education at the University of Perugia, where he earned a degree in economics and commerce. Following his academic training, he entered the family business during the 1960s to begin his professional career in industry.

In 1975, he founded the company that would later be renamed Indesit in 2005. Under his guidance, the firm expanded its reach into a vast array of appliances, including washing machines, dryers, dishwashers, fridges, freezers, cookers, and ovens. Merloni served as the company chairman until 29 April 2010, at which point he transitioned into the role of honorary chairman, passing the presidency to his son, Andrea Merloni.
Professional Advocacy and Recognition
Merloni participated extensively in Italian business associations. He served a four-year term as president of Confindustria, the Italian Employers’ Federation. Between 1984 and 1988, he led Centromarca, and in 2001, he commenced a four-year presidency of Assonime. His contributions to trade were acknowledged with the Leonardo Award for Internationalization in 2004 and the GEI award in New York City in 2005. Additionally, he was granted an honorary doctorate in management engineering from the Politecnico di Milano in 2001.
Decorations and Later Life
His service was marked by several distinctions, including the Knight Grand Cross of the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic, the Order of Merit for Labour, and appointment as a Commander of the Order of the British Empire. Married to Franca Carloni, he was a father to four children: Maria Paola, Andrea, Antonella, and Aristide. He died on 18 June 2016 at the age of 83 in his birthplace of Fabriano.
