Academic Foundation and Early Activism
Kudirka attended the Marijampolė Gymnasium before enrolling at the University of Warsaw in 1881. While his initial focus involved history and philosophy, he eventually shifted his studies to medicine. During this period, he joined the Great Proletariat, a revolutionary organization, leading to his 1885 arrest and temporary university expulsion. He regained his student status in 1887 and completed his medical degree in 1889.

Although he began his literary career by writing poetry in Polish, the influence of figures such as Jonas Jablonskis prompted him to adopt Lithuanian for his work starting in 1888. He co-founded the secret society Lietuva in Warsaw and subsequently edited the clandestine publication Varpas, or The Bell, for a decade. Beyond his editorial responsibilities, he translated literary works by George Byron, Friedrich Schiller, Adam Mickiewicz, Juliusz Słowacki, Adam Asnyk, and Maria Konopnicka into Lithuanian, while also publishing satirical writing and popular songs.
Medical Practice and Final Years
Following his graduation, Kudirka settled into a career as a country doctor, serving patients in Šakiai and Naumiestis. Alongside his medical practice, he continued his correspondence for the Warsaw-based weekly Głos under the pseudonym Nemunas. He struggled with tuberculosis during his final years and passed away on 16 November 1899 at the age of 40 in Naumiestis. His remains are interred at the Kudirkos Naumiestis cemetery.
