Vilde Frang began her formal training at the Barratt Due Institute of Music in Oslo at age seven, marking the start of a career that led to international recognition as a classical violinist. Born in 1986, the Norwegian musician debuted as a soloist with the Norwegian Radio Orchestra at ten years old before establishing a global performance schedule.
Early Development and Mentorship
Frang studied under Stephan Barratt-Due, Alf Richard Kraggerud, and Henning Kraggerud from 1993 until 2002. In 1998, she encountered Anne-Sophie Mutter, subsequently becoming a scholarship holder in the Anne-Sophie Mutter Foundation. Her early professional milestones included an appearance as a soloist with the Oslo Philharmonic at age twelve. Further education brought her to Germany, where she trained at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater Hamburg with Kolja Blacher and the Kronberg Academy with Ana Chumachenco.

After a 2007 performance with the London Philharmonic Orchestra, Frang solidified her presence in the concert circuit. She signed exclusively to EMI Classics in 2008, a label now operating as Warner Classics. Her discography spans major works, including concertos by Prokofiev, Sibelius, Nielsen, Tchaikovsky, Mozart, Korngold, Britten, Bartók, Beethoven, Stravinsky, and Elgar. Since 2013, she has balanced her performance career with a part-time professorship at the Norwegian Academy of Music.
Instruments and Recognition
Frang utilized an 1864 Jean-Baptiste Vuillaume violin until 2021. She currently performs on a 1734 'Rode' Guarneri 'del Gesù' instrument, provided on loan by the Stretton Society. Her work has received significant industry recognition, including the Prince Eugen Culture Prize in 2007, multiple Spellemannprisen awards, and the 2012 Credit Suisse Young Artist Award. Most recently, she received Anders Jahre's Art and Culture Prize in 2025.
