The 2011 European Women's Individual Chess Championship gold medal solidified Viktorija Čmilytė-Nielsen as one of the most consistent competitors in international chess. Born in 1983 in Šiauliai, Lithuania, she balanced an extensive professional gaming career with a prominent parliamentary ascent, eventually presiding over the Lithuanian national legislature as Speaker of the Seimas from 2020 to 2024.
Early Chess Development
Introduced to the game at age six by her father, Viktor Ivanovič Čmil, Čmilytė-Nielsen moved to Riga to study English philology at the University of Latvia after completing her education at Didžvaris Gymnasium. Her early youth career included victory in the 1993 European Youth Chess Championship and the 1995 World Youth Chess Championship in the under-12 category.

In 2000, she won both the women's and absolute Lithuanian national championships, defeating established Grandmasters on tiebreak. Awarded the FIDE Grandmaster title in 2010, she attained the necessary norms at the Gibraltar Chess Festival, the European Team Chess Championship, and the European Women's Individual Championship. She competed for Lithuania in numerous Olympiads, winning individual gold medals on board one in Istanbul in 2000 and Calvià in 2004.
Transition to National Politics
Čmilytė-Nielsen entered the Seimas in 2015, replacing Remigijus Šimašius as a member of the Liberal Movement. She secured re-election in 2016, 2020, and 2024. After serving as opposition leader starting in 2019, she was elected chairperson of the Liberal Movement later that year. In November 2020, she was appointed Speaker of the Seimas, holding the position through 2024.
Awards and Recognition
Her civic contributions have been recognized with several distinctions, including the Knight's Cross of the Order of the Lithuanian Grand Duke Gediminas in 1996 and the Officer's Cross of the Order for Merits to Lithuania in 2011. She also became an honorary citizen of Šiauliai in 2011 and was awarded the Order of Prince Yaroslav the Wise, 2nd class, by Ukraine in 2022.
