The initial manuscript for the dystopian novel Divergent was drafted by Veronica Roth while she was a student on winter break at Northwestern University. This project launched a literary career that has since seen her works reach global audiences, with the central trilogy alone achieving sales exceeding 35 million copies worldwide since its debut in 2011.
Early Development and Education
Born in 1988 in New York City, Roth was raised in Barrington, Illinois, where she attended Barrington High School. She later pursued her interest in creative writing at Northwestern University. Her professional trajectory began while she was still an undergraduate; the publishing rights for her debut novel were secured before she completed her degree in 2010.

Following the April 2011 release of Divergent, the series expanded rapidly into a multi-media franchise. The success of the initial novel and its sequels, Insurgent and Allegiant, prompted film adaptations produced by Summit Entertainment and Lionsgate. Beyond the primary trilogy, Roth explored the perspective of character Tobias Eaton in the collection Four, published in 2014, and released the short story We Can Be Mended in 2017.
Diversification and Recent Projects
Roth has continuously expanded her output beyond the Divergent universe. Her bibliography includes the Carve the Mark duology, the anthology The End and Other Beginnings, and standalone novels such as Chosen Ones, Poster Girl, and Arch-Conspirator. She continues to produce works across various formats, including the novellas When Among Crows and To Clutch a Razor. In 2026, she announced a return to the world of her first series with a new duology beginning with The Sixth Faction.
