Soyuz TM-17 launched on July 1, 1993, carrying Vasily Tsibliyev into orbit for his first tenure as a mission commander. This mission marked the beginning of a spaceflight career that spanned the late Soviet transition into the Russian Federation, placing him at the center of high-stakes operations aboard the orbital research complex Mir.
Early Career and Training
Born in 1954 in Orikhivka, Tsibliyev pursued a career in military aviation before transitioning to the space program. His formal education included studies at the Gagarin Air Force Academy and the Moscow State University of Geodesy and Cartography. By March 26, 1987, he was officially selected as a cosmonaut. His background as an aircraft pilot provided the operational foundation necessary for the complex tasks required of a spacecraft commander.

Tsibliyev participated in two primary spaceflight missions. His initial journey lasted from July 1, 1993, to January 14, 1994, aboard Soyuz TM-17. He returned to orbit on February 2, 1997, commanding Soyuz TM-25 until August 14, 1997. During this second rotation, he served as commander when the Mir station was involved in a collision with an incoming Progress spacecraft, a significant event in the facility's operational history. He officially concluded his active career as a cosmonaut on June 19, 1998.
Leadership and Recognition
Following his retirement from flight status, Tsibliyev maintained his involvement in the Russian aerospace sector. He served as the head of the Yuri Gagarin Cosmonaut Training Center between 2003 and 2009. His professional contributions have been acknowledged through various military and civil honors, including the title of Hero of the Russian Federation and the Order of Merit for the Fatherland, 3rd class.
