Between 1863 and 1871, Polenov attended the Imperial Academy of Arts in Saint Petersburg while simultaneously pursuing studies at the university's law faculty. His early technical proficiency led to significant academic recognition, including the Large Gold Medal of the Imperial Academy of Arts in 1871. This honor was awarded for his painting, The Resurrection of the Daughter of Jairus, a work that marked his initial exploration of biblical themes.

Following his graduation, Polenov utilized a state-funded scholarship to travel extensively through Europe. He spent time in Venice and Rome before establishing a studio in Paris and working in Veules-les-Roses. During these years abroad, he engaged with the local artistic circles of the time and refined his approach to composition and color, influenced by his encounters with European traditions.
Late Career and Legacy
Upon returning to Russia, Polenov settled in Moscow, where he continued his work as a painter within the realist tradition. His professional life included a tenure as a court painter. By the time of his death in 1927 in Polenovo, he had witnessed profound geopolitical shifts across the Russian Republic and the Soviet Union. He is buried in the Tula Oblast, and his house museum remains a site dedicated to his life and work.
