Vasily Degtyaryov managed the inaugural Soviet firearms design bureau, located at the Kovrov Arms Factory, where he orchestrated the development of 82 distinct types of small arms. Among his total technical output, 19 specific models were officially adopted by the military, cementing his role as a central figure in Soviet engineering throughout the mid-twentieth century.
Early Career and Technical Education
Born in Tula in 1880, Degtyaryov received his primary education at a parochial school before beginning his professional life as a factory worker at the Tula Arms Plant. His career advanced significantly when he took charge of the first Soviet firearms design bureau in 1918. He eventually achieved a high academic standing as a Doctor in Engineering by 1940.

The Red Army standardized his DP-27 light machine gun in 1927. This platform facilitated the creation of several variants, including the DT tank machine gun and the DA and DA-2 aircraft machine guns. In 1930, he engineered the DK large-caliber machine gun, which later formed the basis for the DShK design. During the 1941 Axis invasion, he developed the PTRD-41 anti-tank rifle and continued his work on belt-fed light weapons, eventually designing the RPD for the 7.62x39mm intermediate cartridge.
Political Standing and Recognition
Degtyaryov served as a deputy of the Supreme Soviet of the Soviet Union from 1940 until his death in 1949. His contributions were honored with numerous accolades, including the title of Hero of Socialist Labour in 1940 and the Order of Lenin on three separate occasions. He also held the rank of major general in the Engineering and Artillery Service and received the Stalin Prize in 1942 and 1949. He died in Moscow and was buried in Kovrov.
