Eighty world records and eighty-one Soviet national records defined the athletic career of Vasily Ivanovich Alekseyev. Between 1970 and 1977, he dominated the super heavyweight category, claiming gold medals at the 1972 and 1976 Olympic Games. His consistent ability to increase his own records earned him significant state recognition and placed him at the forefront of international powerlifting.
Early Development and Training
Born in 1942 in Pokrovo-Shishkino, Alekseyev began his formal training at age 18 with Trud VSS. Under the guidance of coach Rudolf Plyukfelder, he developed his foundational skills until 1968. He subsequently transitioned to a solo training regimen, choosing to increase his total body mass to compete effectively within the super heavyweight class. He graduated from the branch of the Novocherkassk Polytechnical Institute in 1971 while residing in Shakhty.

Alekseyev gained international prominence in January 1970 when he set his initial world record. At the 1970 World Weightlifting Championship in Columbus, he became the first competitor to clean and jerk 500 pounds, or 227 kilograms. To maximize government bonuses, he often improved his records by increments of 0.5 kilograms. By 1972, he established an official world record total of 645 kilograms in Tallinn.
Transition to Coaching and Public Office
Following a unsuccessful performance at the 1980 Moscow Olympics, where he recorded a zero in the snatch, Alekseyev retired from active competition. He entered the political arena in 1987 as a representative for the Ryazan District in the Congress of People's Deputies. From 1990 to 1992, he served as a coach, leading the Unified Team to ten weightlifting medals, including five golds, at the 1992 Summer Olympics.
Final Years and Legacy
Alekseyev received numerous honors, including the Order of Lenin, the Order of the Red Banner of Labour, and the Order of Friendship of Peoples. In 1993, he was inducted into the International Weightlifting Federation Hall of Fame. He passed away on 25 November 2011 in a German clinic due to heart complications and was buried at the Central Cemetery. He was survived by his wife, Olimpiada, and sons Sergey and Dmitry.
