Udo Jürgens

Austrian singer and composer (1934–2014)

Udo Jürgens (1934–2014) was an Austrian singer and composer. He was born in Klagenfurt am Wörthersee on 30 September 1934. He died in Münsterlingen on 21 December 2014, at the age of 80.

The work most closely associated with the name includes Der Mann mit dem Fagott, Merci Chérie, Ich war noch niemals in New York, Lieb Vaterland and Die Krone der Schöpfung. The output is classed under pop music, schlager music and chanson. The active career dates from 1957.

Udo Jürgens received Officer's Cross of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany (1994), Golden Feather (2000), Ring of Honour of the City of Vienna, Romy (2011) and Decoration of Honour in Gold for Services to the State of Vienna. He took part in Eurovision Song Contest 1966, Eurovision Song Contest 1965, Eurovision Song Contest 1964 and Sanremo Music Festival 1965.

Udo Jürgens was the son of Rudolf Bockelmann and Käthe Bockelmann. He married Panja Jürgens and Corinna Jürgens. He had four recorded children, John Jürgens, Jenny Jürgens, Gloria Burda and Sonja Jürgens. He is recorded as following atheism. The recorded cause of death is heart failure.
