Rachel Trixie Anne Gardner served as a member of the House of Lords for over 40 years, becoming the first Australian woman to be elevated to the British peerage. Born in Parkes, New South Wales, in 1927, she established a professional life in London that spanned dentistry, local government, and national legislative duty until her death in 2024.
Early Education and Career
Born to Greg McGirr, a former New South Wales Labor Party leader, and Rachel Rittenburg Miller, Trixie Gardner pursued dentistry at the University of Sydney. She earned her Bachelor of Dental Surgery in 1954, during which time she resided at Sancta Sophia College. Her education extended to Paris, where she attended Le Cordon Bleu. In 1957, she relocated to the United Kingdom to continue her professional life.

Gardner was active in London politics for decades, serving as a Westminster City Council member from 1968 to 1978. Her parliamentary ambitions included standing for election in Blackburn in 1970 and North Cornwall in 1974. She also served on the Greater London Council, representing Havering from 1970 to 1973 and Southgate between 1977 and 1986. During her tenure, she became a Justice of the Peace in 1971 and later served as Lady Mayoress of Westminster in 1987–88.
Legislative Legacy
On 19 June 1981, she was created a life peer as Baroness Gardner of Parkes. Her legislative contributions included representing the United Kingdom on the United Nations Status of Women Commission from 1982 to 1988. At the time of her death on 14 April 2024, she held the distinction of being the senior life peer in the House of Lords. Her work was formally recognized with an appointment as a Member of the Order of Australia in 2003 and a Fellowship of the Royal Society of Arts.
