During the recording of Dookie, his energetic and often unpredictable drumming style required careful management by production teams to ensure tempo consistency for radio. He also contributed as a songwriter and vocalist, penning tracks including 'Dominated Love Slave' from Kerplunk and 'All by Myself' from Dookie. His role evolved from pure percussion to occasional guitar work and singing, notably on 'Rock and Roll Girlfriend' from the American Idiot album.
