Tommy Bolin

Thomas Richard Bolin emerged from Sioux City, Iowa, to build a career as a versatile American composer and guitarist across the rock and jazz-fusion genres. Between 1969 and 1976, he navigated high-profile roles in bands such as Zephyr, the James Gang, and Deep Purple, while contributing to landmark studio projects for artists like Billy Cobham and Moxy.

Early Career and Zephyr

Bolin began his career in the early 1960s with bands including Denny and the Triumphs and A Patch of Blue. After moving to Colorado, he formed Zephyr, a group named after the California Zephyr train. Alongside bassist David Givens and vocalist Candy Givens, Bolin performed at large venues and recorded for labels before forming the jazz-rock project Energy in 1972.

Collaborations and the James Gang

In 1973, Bolin joined the James Gang, replacing Joe Walsh’s successor, Domenic Troiano. He recorded two albums with the group, Bang and Miami, acting as primary writer for most tracks. During this period, he played guitar on Billy Cobham’s jazz-fusion album, Spectrum, which caught the attention of Deep Purple keyboardist Jon Lord. His reputation as a studio session player also expanded through contributions to albums by Alphonse Mouzon and the band Moxy.

Deep Purple and Solo Endeavors

Bolin joined Deep Purple in 1975 following Ritchie Blackmore’s departure, contributing to the album Come Taste the Band. He simultaneously launched a solo career, releasing the album Teaser in 1975 and Private Eyes in 1976. Despite the musical output, his tenure with Deep Purple was marked by internal tension and inconsistent live performances, culminating in the band's dissolution in July 1976. He subsequently focused on the Tommy Bolin Band until his death in Miami later that year.
