Born in New York City in 1950, he transitioned from a successful tenure as a network executive into a dual career as an independent television producer and a prominent investor within the Fenway Sports Group.
Early Career in Television
After graduating from Harvard University in 1971, Werner entered the television industry at ABC-TV in 1973. By 1975, he rose to Director of East Coast Prime Time Development, and by 1979, he served as a senior vice president. His work during this period included the development of programs such as Soap, Mork & Mindy, Taxi, and Bosom Buddies.

In 1980, Werner left ABC to establish The Carsey-Werner Company alongside Marcy Carsey. The firm became responsible for several notable series, including The Cosby Show, Roseanne, A Different World, 3rd Rock from the Sun, and That '70s Show. In 1996, his contributions to the medium were recognized with his induction into the Television Hall of Fame. Later, he joined the launch of the cable channel Oxygen in 2000 and served as executive producer for the revival of Roseanne and its spin-off, The Conners.
Ownership of the San Diego Padres
Werner entered sports ownership on June 14, 1990, when he led a group of 15 investors to purchase the San Diego Padres for $75 million. As the general managing partner, he served on the Major League Baseball Executive Council. His tenure was marked by controversy, notably the 1990 national anthem performance by Roseanne Barr, and widespread criticism following cost-cutting player trades. He sold his majority interest in the franchise in 1994.
Fenway Sports Group
Returning to baseball in 2001, Werner joined a group including John W. Henry and Larry Lucchino to acquire the Boston Red Sox. Serving as chairman since February 2002, he oversaw four World Series titles for the franchise. In 2010, he became chairman of the organization that owns Liverpool F.C., where the team secured multiple domestic and international trophies, including the Premier League title and the UEFA Champions League.
