Early Career and Arthouse Roots
Moving to Berlin in 1986, Tykwer worked as a projectionist and managed the Moviemento cinema. Encouraged by filmmaker Rosa von Praunheim to leverage personal experiences, he produced his first short, Because, in 1990. After creating Epilog in 1992, he directed his feature debut, the psychological thriller Deadly Maria, in 1993. By 1994, he joined forces with Stefan Arndt, Wolfgang Becker, and Dani Levy to form the production company X Filme Creative Pool.

Tykwer gained significant recognition with the 1998 thriller Run Lola Run, which earned $7 million at the US box office and became the most successful German film of that year. Following this, he directed The Princess and the Warrior in his hometown and the 2002 English-language feature Heaven. His later work included the 2006 adaptation of Patrick Süskind's novel Perfume: The Story of a Murderer and the 2009 Hollywood production The International.
Collaborative Ventures and Composition
Collaboration remains a cornerstone of his practice. With Johnny Klimek and Reinhold Heil, he formed the musical trio Pale 3 to score his films. He also partnered with The Wachowskis on projects including the film Cloud Atlas, the series Sense8, and the score for The Matrix Resurrections. In television, he co-created the series Babylon Berlin, a project that debuted in 2017 and expanded over several seasons.
Current Projects
Tykwer maintains an active presence in the industry, directing A Hologram for the King in 2016 and presiding over the 68th Berlinale in 2018. His latest directorial effort, The Light, starring Lars Eidinger and Nicolette Krebitz, is scheduled to open the 75th Berlinale in February 2025.
