Constantin Tino Rossi, a tenor gifted with a voice suited for opera, built a 50-year career that encompassed more than 2,000 recorded songs and appearances in over 25 motion pictures across the French-speaking world.
Early Career and Parisian Success
Born in Ajaccio, Corsica, in 1907, Rossi began his musical journey playing guitar and performing in local clubs. He moved to Marseille and toured resort venues on the French Riviera before arriving in Paris during the early 1930s. He secured a contract with Columbia Records, joining an ensemble of major musical figures including Lucienne Boyer and Jean Sablon. Songwriter Vincent Scotto became a key collaborator, composing and arranging many of the tracks that established Rossi as a premier box office attraction.

Rossi debuted on screen in the 1934 film Les Nuits Moscovites, achieving broader popularity with 1936's Marinella. During the German occupation of France, his cinema career reached a high point with titles such as Fièvres and L'Île d'amour. In October 1944, authorities arrested Rossi while investigating his acquaintance, Étienne Léandri. Though detained at the prison of Fresnes for three months, he refused legal counsel and was eventually released after a judge found the collaboration allegations groundless. Evidence later confirmed that in 1943, Rossi had used his vehicle to support a resistance network.
Honours and Final Years
In 1948, Rossi married dancer Lilia Vetti, with whom he had a son, Laurent. Throughout his later years, his stature in French culture remained significant. President François Mitterrand awarded him the title of Commander of the Legion of Honour in 1982. That same year, Rossi held his final public performances at the Casino de Paris. He died from pancreatic cancer in 1983 at Neuilly-sur-Seine and was buried in his hometown of Ajaccio.
