Born in 1960, Cook graduated from Robertsdale High School in 1978. He pursued higher education at Auburn University, earning a Bachelor of Science in industrial engineering in 1982. He later attended Duke University, receiving his Master of Business Administration in 1988, where he was recognized as a Fuqua Scholar. Before joining Apple, he spent twelve years at IBM and held roles at Intelligent Electronics and Compaq.

Joining Apple in 1998 as senior vice president for worldwide operations, Cook transformed the company's supply chain. He replaced internal manufacturing with contract partners and significantly reduced inventory cycles. These efforts secured consistent access to essential components, including flash memory, which proved critical for the successful deployment of products like the iPod Nano, iPhone, and iPad.
