Educational Foundations

The Schmidheiny family business empire, focused on construction materials including bricks and cement, underwent a formal division in 1984. Through this restructuring, Thomas Schmidheiny inherited the cement manufacturer Holcim, a company established by his grand-uncle in 1912. He served as the chairman of Holcim until 2003, stepping down following a settlement regarding insider trading investigations in Spain. He maintained his connection to the firm through a seat on the board and later became the largest shareholder of the merged entity, Lafarge-Holcim.
Investment Activity and Philanthropic Engagement
