A law degree from the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven provided the foundation for Thomas Leysen, an Antwerp-born executive whose career has spanned industrial manufacturing, financial services, and European media markets. Over several decades, he has transitioned from corporate management roles to steering the boards of multiple international organizations across the banking, technology, and publishing sectors.

Industrial Transformation at Umicore

Leysen directed the evolution of Umicore, previously known as Union Minière. He oversaw the company's shift from a traditional metals producer into a materials technology firm. Under his tenure, which lasted until 2008 as chief executive officer and subsequently as chairman, the organization established market positions in automotive catalysts, battery materials, and precious metals recycling.

Banking and Media Leadership

In the financial sector, Leysen served as chairman of the board for KBC Group from 2011 to 2020. Simultaneously, he expanded his influence in the media landscape as a major shareholder and chairman of Mediahuis. This publishing group maintains a footprint in Belgium, the Netherlands, Luxembourg, Germany, and Ireland, managing titles such as De Standaard, De Telegraaf, and the Irish Independent. Additionally, he became chairman of dsm-firmenich, a health and nutrition firm listed on Euronext Amsterdam, in March 2001.

Governance and Public Service

Leysen has held various leadership roles in professional organizations and policy committees. He chaired the Federation of Enterprises in Belgium between 2008 and 2011 and led the Belgian Corporate Governance Commission from 2014 until 2023. His non-profit and board engagements include the King Baudouin Foundation, the Flemish Heritage Council, and the Rubenianum Fund. He remains active with the European Council on Foreign Relations and the Bilderberg Meetings steering committee.
