Early Success and Junior Championships
Lange began his international trajectory at the 1980 World Rowing Junior Championships, securing gold in the double sculls. He maintained this momentum by winning the singles title at the subsequent two Junior World Championships. Transitioning to senior competition in 1983 at age 19, he partnered with Uwe Heppner to claim victory in the double sculls at the World Rowing Championships, a feat they replicated in 1985. The duo was poised for the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, but the East German boycott of the event precluded their participation.

In 1986, Lange shifted his focus to the single sculls, though illness disrupted his inaugural season in the category. Returning to form in 1987, he captured his first World Championship in the single sculls, defeating experienced competitors Pertti Karppinen and Peter-Michael Kolbe. He extended this dominance by winning gold at the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul and claimed another World Championship title in 1989.
Professional Transition and Olympic Completion
During the collapse of the German Democratic Republic, Lange balanced his athletic career with medical studies. In 1990, he earned a silver medal in the double sculls with Stefan Ullrich. By 1991, competing for a unified Germany, he reclaimed the world title in the single sculls. He repeated his success at the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona. Following a third-place finish at the 1993 World Championships and a victory at the Henley Royal Regatta, he concluded his competitive career by earning a bronze medal at the 1996 Summer Olympics.
