Theofanis Gekas

Theofanis Gekas established his professional football credentials in 1998 at his hometown club, AEL, before embarking on a career that spanned Greece, Germany, England, Spain, and Turkey. A proficient striker, he gained recognition as a prolific goalscorer in top-tier European leagues and a significant contributor to the Greek national squad during his tenure as a player.

Early Career and Domestic Success

Gekas began his journey in the Greek Second Division with AEL in 1998. By 2001, he transferred to Kallithea, where he helped the team secure promotion to the top division, recording 14 goals in 26 league matches. His performance earned him a move to Panathinaikos in the 2005 winter break. At Panathinaikos, he netted 23 goals in 41 appearances and finished as the top goalscorer of the Greek league in 2005.

Impact in the Bundesliga

In 2006, Gekas joined VfL Bochum on loan, where he became a key player in the side's battle against relegation. He finished the 2006–07 season as the Bundesliga top scorer with 20 goals. Following this success, he moved to Bayer 04 Leverkusen. His subsequent years in Germany included a loan spell at Hertha BSC, where he scored a hat-trick against VfL Wolfsburg in 2010, and a tenure at Eintracht Frankfurt, where he scored 16 goals during the 2010–11 campaign.

International Representation

Between 2005 and 2014, Gekas earned 78 caps for Greece. He participated in two European Championships and two World Cups. His scoring prowess was evident during the 2010 FIFA World Cup qualification, where he finished as the top scorer of the European section with 10 goals. He remains Greece's third-highest all-time goalscorer with 24 international goals.

Tenures in England, Spain, and Turkey

Gekas had limited success in England during a 2009 loan to Portsmouth, where he made only one appearance. His international career also included a brief spell in Spain with Levante UD in 2012. In Turkey, he represented Samsunspor and Akhisar Belediyespor, consistently contributing goals to help his clubs navigate league challenges.
