Early Training and Graphic Design
Born in Kyustendil in 1968, Ushev completed his initial studies at Plovdiv’s School of Scenic Arts, where he trained in stage decoration, animation, and make-up. He subsequently earned a master's degree in graphic design from the National Academy of Art in Sofia. Before establishing himself as a filmmaker, he built a reputation working as a poster and graphic designer.

After relocating to Canada in 1999, Ushev began his prolific tenure with the National Film Board of Canada. His early directorial output included films such as Vertical, The Man Who Waited, and Tower Bawher, all released in 2006. His 2008 short Drux Flux secured the Canadian Film Institute Award for Best Canadian Animation at the Ottawa International Animation Festival. In 2010, he released Lipsett Diaries, a documentary-style animation about Arthur Lipsett, which won the Genie Award for Best Animated Short in 2011.
Critical Reception and Trilogy Works
Ushev’s 20th-century trilogy includes the 2013 film Gloria Victoria, which was surveyed by critics and festival programmers as the most well-liked animated short of its release year. The film also earned a nomination at the 2014 Annie Awards. His work on Blind Vaysha received further industry recognition, including the Cartoon Network Award for Best Narrative Short Animation and the Canadian Film Institute Award for Best Canadian Animation in 2016. In addition to his filmography, he has created multimedia animations for David Gilmour’s In an Island album and tour.
Experimental Installations
Ushev incorporates experimental visual forms into his practice, including public space installations and virtual reality projects. Notable works include Diagonales, projected on the facade of the Montreal Public Library, and the installation Third page from the Sun. For the film-action 100 prints of Norman. Erased., he spent ten days erasing prints of Norman McLaren’s work within an aquarium at the Museum of Civilisation in Quebec.
