Toblerone emerged from a collaboration between Theodor Tobler and production manager Emil Baumann in 1908, merging the surname of the founder with the Italian term for honey and almond nougat. This creation established the first patented milk chocolate bar incorporating almonds and honey, setting a new standard for Swiss confectionery production at the turn of the century.
Early Business Development
Born in Bern in 1876, Theodor Tobler was the son of Johann Jakob Tobler, a confectioner originally from Lutzenberg. After attending school in Bern between 1885 and 1892, he pursued a commercial education in Geneva and Venice. Upon his return in 1894, he joined his father's confectionery shop. By 1899, the family business expanded into a factory titled Fabrique de Chocolat Berne, Tobler & Cie. His father handed over full control of the operations to him in 1900.

The development of the Toblerone bar necessitated significant technical and legal protection. Tobler secured a patent for the manufacturing process in Bern in 1909. That same year, the brand received official status at the Swiss Federal Institute of Intellectual Property. These actions solidified the market position of the company before he eventually departed from the enterprise in 1933.
Diversification and Post-Chocolate Ventures
Following his exit from the family chocolate firm, Tobler acquired the Klameth confectionery company in 1934. His efforts to produce chewing gum were unsuccessful, leading him to pivot toward distributing Wrigley chewing gum within Switzerland. In 1937, he established Typon AG in Burgdorf, a company focused on manufacturing films for the graphic industry.
Civic Engagement and Political Interests
Tobler maintained an active public life, including serving as a witness at the Bern Trial on behalf of freemasonry. A member of the masonic lodge zur Hoffnung of Bern since 1902, he also identified as a pacifist and proponent of pan-European ideals. In 1934, he helped found the Europa Union in Basel, an early organization dedicated to European federalism.
