After completing his medical doctorate in 1913, Morell served as a ship's doctor and later held a commission as an army battalion medical officer until 1917. Following the First World War, he opened a private practice in Berlin in 1918. With his marriage to the wealthy actress Johanna Moller in 1919, he secured the financial resources to modernize his office. Morell joined the Nazi Party in 1933. His association with the regime began in 1935 when he successfully treated the photographer Heinrich Hoffmann, who subsequently introduced him to Hitler. By 1936, Morell was providing medical care to Hitler, primarily using vitamins and Mutaflor, a probiotic strain isolated in 1917, to address persistent stomach cramps. This success earned him a place within Hitler's social inner circle, despite deep skepticism from other officials like Hermann Göring and Heinrich Himmler, who dismissed his unorthodox methods.
Clinical Methods and Administration of Substances
Morell’s clinical approach relied heavily on a regimen of commercial and proprietary preparations, often administered via injection up to 20 times per day. His records indicate the use of at least 74 distinct substances, including psychoactive compounds such as methamphetamine, cocaine, and barbiturates. Substances like Vitamultin, which contained methamphetamine, were used to combat morning grogginess, while Brom-Nervacit was utilized to offset stimulant-induced sleeplessness. Nutrition inspector Ernst-Günther Schenck identified the presence of addictive stimulants in these preparations by 1943, though the matter was suppressed by Nazi leadership.
Status and Recognition
Despite criticism from colleagues such as Dr. Karl Brandt, Morell retained his position until the final stages of the Battle of Berlin. His proximity to the Nazi leadership enabled him to amass significant wealth through business dealings. His service was recognized with numerous awards, including the Golden Party Badge, the Anschluss Medal, the Memel Medal, and the Sudetenland Medal with Bar. In 1944, he was awarded the Knight's Cross of the War Merit Cross without Swords. He died in 1948 in Tegernsee.
