Academic Formation and Early Career
Ziegler completed his studies at the University of Tübingen, where he pursued theology and philosophy. His early teaching career took him to various locations, including secondary school roles in Heilbronn, Winterthur, and Baden-Baden. During this initial stage, he also contributed to the curriculum at the Tübinger Stift. By 1882, he accepted a position as konrektor at a Protestant secondary school located in Strasbourg.

In 1886, Ziegler transitioned to a professorship of philosophy at the University of Strasbourg, where he remained for the duration of his academic tenure. Among his pupils at the institution was Albert Schweitzer, who later referenced Ziegler in his own autobiography, Out of my Life and Thought. Ziegler continued his scholarly output until his death in 1918 in Sierentz.
Literary and Philosophical Contributions
Ziegler's bibliography reflects his wide-ranging interests in ethics, pedagogy, and social history. Notable works include his 1890 system of ethics, Sittliches Sein und sittliches Werden, and his 1893 study on religion, Religion und Religionen. He authored a history of education in 1895 and a history of Christian ethics in 1896. His 1899 analysis, Die geistigen und socialen strömungen des neunzehnten jahrhunderts, examined contemporary intellectual currents. Additionally, he produced a biography of David Friedrich Strauss and a 1900 publication regarding Friedrich Nietzsche, the latter derived from lectures delivered in 1897.
