A reported £100 million sale of his equity stake in the lingerie brand La Senza in 2006 marked a significant milestone in the retail career of Theodoros Paphitis. Born in Limassol in 1959, he navigated early struggles with dyslexia at Woodberry Down School to build a diverse commercial portfolio across the United Kingdom.
Early Career and Retail Strategy
Paphitis began his working life as a filing clerk and tea boy at a City of London insurance broker. At 18, he transitioned to sales at Watches of Switzerland on Bond Street, before learning to analyze balance sheets while selling commercial mortgages at Legal & General. His first major business moves involved property finance and the telecommunications sector through NAG Telecom. After identifying the insolvency of the Ryman stationery chain, he acquired the business and implemented management reforms to return it to profitability. This approach of stabilizing failing retail brands later extended to his acquisitions of Robert Dyas and the London Graphic Centre.

Paphitis achieved wider national recognition as an investor on the BBC business programme Dragons' Den, where he appeared from 2005 until 2012. Known for a direct communication style, he later made guest appearances in the show's seventeenth and eighteenth series. His other television work includes the BBC Two series Theo's Adventure Capitalists, which documented British businesses expanding into markets like Brazil and Vietnam, and the product-focused series Britain's Next Big Thing. He also participated in the 2014 documentary Famous, Rich and Hungry to highlight issues of poverty in the UK.
Sporting Interests
In 1997, Paphitis became chairman of Millwall Football Club, successfully leading the organization out of administration. During his tenure, which lasted until 2005, he appointed Dennis Wise as manager and guided the club to their first official FA Cup Final in 2004. He remains active in sports administration as a director and part-owner of the Isthmian League side Walton & Hersham, while his companies have provided sponsorship for league cup competitions.
Academic and Institutional Roles
Beyond his commercial interests, Paphitis has engaged with higher education institutions. He has served as the Chancellor of Southampton Solent University since 2018. Additionally, in September 2025, he accepted the position of Visiting Professor of Entrepreneurship at Derby University, where he also established the Chancellor's Entrepreneur's Club to support business development among students.
