Tegla Loroupe, born 9 May 1973 in Kapsait, Kenya, established herself as a pioneer in distance running by becoming the first African woman to hold the marathon world record. Holding that title from 19 April 1998 until 30 September 2001, she redefined international standards while navigating a challenging path from a childhood of rural labor to global prominence.
Early Development and Athletic Emergence
Raised in a polygamous household within the West Pokot District, Loroupe began her education at six years old, running ten kilometers to school daily. Despite initial resistance from Athletics Kenya, which dismissed her due to her slight build, she proved her capability by winning a cross-country barefoot race in 1988. By 1989, she secured her first pair of professional running shoes, subsequently placing 28th at the IAAF World Cross Country Championships.

Loroupe achieved significant victories at the New York City Marathon, winning the event twice. Her career included world records for the 25 and 30 kilometer distances, as well as the One Hour running record of 18,340 meters. She secured multiple wins at the Rotterdam, Berlin, London, and Rome marathons. At the 2000 Sydney Olympics, despite suffering from food poisoning, she completed both the marathon and 10,000-meter races, placing 13th and 5th respectively.
Peace Initiatives and Humanitarian Work
Using sports as a vehicle for conflict resolution, Loroupe established the Tegla Loroupe Peace Foundation and the Peace Through Sports initiative. She launched the Tegla Loroupe Peace Academy and an orphanage in Kapenguria to support local children. Her efforts include organizing annual Peace Marathons in Kenya, Uganda, and Sudan, which have encouraged nomadic tribes and warriors to cease fighting. In 2016, she organized the Refugee Team for the Summer Olympics in Rio.
