The first government of Bangladesh was led by Tajuddin Ahmad during the liberation conflict of 1971 to 1972. Operating from exile in India, he established the provisional administration following the military crackdown on the East Pakistani population, becoming a central figure in the eventual formation of the independent nation.
Early Political Involvement
Born in Kapasia Upazila in 1925, Tajuddin Ahmad entered public life while still a student. He joined the Muslim League in 1943 during the final years of British India. He aligned himself with a progressive Dhaka-based faction that distanced itself from the party's traditional elite, often working out of a party office at 150 Moghultuli Lane. His formative years were marked by a commitment to grassroots organizing and participation in the 1952 Language Movement as a member of the Jubo League.

In 1953, he joined the Awami Muslim League, which later transitioned into the secular Awami League. He successfully sought election to the East Pakistan Provincial Assembly the following year. By 1966, he had risen to the position of General Secretary, where he became a key aide to Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. During this period, he formulated the six-point demand that became foundational to the political movement for independence, and he frequently faced imprisonment for his activities.
Government and Final Years
After the 1970 Pakistani general election returned a majority for the Awami League, Tajuddin participated in negotiations regarding the transfer of power. Following the outbreak of conflict in 1971, he escaped to India to organize the provisional government. After independence, he served as the Minister of Finance and Planning from 1972 until his resignation in 1974. Following the assassination of Sheikh Mujib in a 1975 coup, Tajuddin was incarcerated in Dhaka and assassinated in prison on 3 November 1975.
