Early Education and Career
Born in Jalandhar in 1931, Swraj Paul attended Doaba College and Forman Christian College in Lahore. He eventually traveled to the United States to study at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, earning BSc, MSc, and MechE degrees in mechanical engineering. Upon returning to India, he initially worked for the family-run Apeejay Group, which was managed by his brothers, Satya and Jit Paul.

After establishing the Caparo Group in 1968, Paul expanded the business into one of the largest steel conversion and distribution operations in the region. The firm manufactured precision tubes, spirally welded products, and various structural steels. By 2015, the company employed over 10,000 staff globally. However, the organization faced a major crisis in October 2015 when sixteen of its twenty UK-based limited companies entered administration.
Political Engagement
Appointed as a Labour life peer in 1996, he served in the House of Lords until his death in 2025. He was sworn into the Privy Council in 2009 and served as a deputy speaker. During his tenure, he chaired the Olympic Delivery Committee to help secure and develop land for the 2012 Summer Olympics. In 2009, he faced scrutiny regarding expense claims, ultimately repaying the funds and receiving a four-month suspension after committees concluded he had been negligent.
Philanthropy and Academic Contributions
Paul dedicated significant resources to education and charity, often honoring his daughter through the Ambika Paul Foundation. He served as Chancellor of the University of Wolverhampton from 1998 until 2025 and held similar roles at Thames Valley University and the University of Westminster. Additionally, he donated $5 million to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 2020 to establish a theatre at Kresge Auditorium.
