Early Career and Frankfurt Residencies
Väth began DJing at 17 in his parents' pub near Frankfurt. By 1982, he secured a residency at the Dorian Gray club in Frankfurt am Main. There, he met collaborators Michael Münzing and Luca Anzilotti. The trio formed the group OFF, producing the 1986 hit "Electrica Salsa," which sold one million copies and led to performances with Axel Bauer and Vanessa Paradis.

In 1988, at 24, Väth partnered with Michael Münzing and Mattias Martinsohn to open the nightclub Omen in Frankfurt. Previously operating as Vogue, the venue became a cornerstone of German techno. Despite its critical success, legal and landlord disputes led to its closure in 1998, which triggered a massive final event that required police to block traffic to accommodate the crowds.
Label Ownership and Artistic Development
In 1991, Väth co-founded the record label Eye Q with Heinz Roth and Matthias Hoffmann. He released notable albums, including 1992's Accident in Paradise and 1994's The Harlequin, the Robot, and the Ballet-Dancer. Simultaneously, he managed Harthouse Records. Following his departure from these labels in 1997, he signed a three-album contract with Virgin Records, producing Fusion, Contact, and Fire.
The Evolution of Cocoon
Inspired by a 1994 La Fura dels Baus show in Berlin, Väth established Cocoon as a party series before expanding it into a booking agency and record label. Cocoon Recordings aimed to support emerging producers, reaching 100 releases by 2013. The project served as the base for his long-term residency at Amnesia in Ibiza, where he curated electronic lineups for 18 years.
