Erlander completed his PhD in mathematics at Stockholm University in 1968. His expertise in mathematical modeling led to the publication of the monograph Cost-Minimizing Choice Behavior in Transportation Planning, released by Springer Verlag in 2010.

Beyond his research output, Erlander engaged in significant governance roles at Linköping University. He directed the department of mathematics from 1973 until 1976 and served as the dean of the Institute of Technology from 1978 to 1983. Subsequently, he held the position of rector of Linköping University for twelve years, from 1983 to 1995.
Professional Recognition and Legacy
In 1983, Erlander was elected as a member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Engineering Sciences. His academic standing was further recognized through an honorary doctorate awarded by Gdańsk University in Poland. Outside of his direct mathematical output, he contributed to historical record-keeping by publishing several diaries belonging to his father, Tage Erlander, who served as the Prime Minister of Sweden between 1946 and 1969.
