Early Legal and Political Foundations
Born in 1952 at Ambala Cantonment, Swaraj pursued studies at Sanatan Dharma College, Panjab University, and Kurukshetra University. She commenced her professional life as a lawyer in 1973, practicing at the Supreme Court of India. Her political emergence occurred during the 1970s through the Total Revolution Movement. By 1977, she secured a seat in the Haryana Legislative Assembly, eventually holding state-level ministerial portfolios covering labour, employment, education, and civil supplies.

Swaraj transitioned to national politics in 1990, serving as a member of the Rajya Sabha. Her parliamentary career included multiple terms in the 11th, 12th, and 16th Lok Sabha. In 1998, she briefly served as the Chief Minister of Delhi. During her time as Union Cabinet Minister for Information and Broadcasting, she enacted policy changes such as designating film production as an industry, which facilitated bank financing for the sector.
Foreign Policy and Health Initiatives
Serving as the Minister of External Affairs from 2014 to 2019, Swaraj became the second woman to hold this position. During her tenure as Union Health Minister from 2003 to 2004, she oversaw the establishment of six All India Institute of Medical Sciences across various states, including Bhopal, Bhubaneshwar, Jodhpur, Patna, Raipur, and Rishikesh. Following her departure from office, she received the Padma Vibhushan in 2020 posthumously for her contributions to public affairs.
