Marion Hugh Knight Jr., known as Suge, emerged from a brief career in professional American football to become a dominant force in the 1990s music industry. As the co-founder and CEO of Death Row Records, he orchestrated the commercial success of gangsta rap by overseeing the release of influential albums by artists such as Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg.
Athletic Background
Born in 1965 in Compton, California, Knight attended Lynwood High School, where he participated in track and football. He continued his athletic career at El Camino College from 1983 to 1985 before transferring to the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. Though he went undrafted in the 1987 NFL draft, he appeared in two games for the Los Angeles Rams as a replacement player during the 1987 NFL players strike.

Following his football tenure, Knight entered the music industry as a concert promoter and bodyguard. In 1991, he co-founded Death Row Records alongside Dr. Dre and The D.O.C. The label secured a distribution deal with Interscope, leading to the rapid success of Dr. Dre's 1992 album The Chronic and Snoop Dogg's 1993 debut, Doggystyle. Knight managed various artists, including DJ Quik and MC Hammer, while expanding his influence in the Las Vegas area with the establishment of Club 662.
Legal and Professional Turbulence
Knight’s business operations were frequently accompanied by reports of violence and intimidation. In 1995, he secured the release of Tupac Shakur from prison by posting $1.4 million in bail, signing the rapper to Death Row. The following year, Shakur was fatally wounded in a drive-by shooting in Las Vegas while riding in a car driven by Knight. The subsequent departures of Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg, combined with Knight’s legal issues, led to a rapid decline for the label.
Incarceration
Throughout the late 1990s and early 2000s, Knight faced multiple periods of incarceration related to assault convictions and parole violations. In 2018, he pleaded no contest to voluntary manslaughter following a fatal hit-and-run incident in 2015. Under California's three-strikes law, he received a 28-year prison sentence. He is currently eligible for parole in October 2034.
