Su Bingtian: Six Point Two Nine
In the semi-final of the Olympic 100 metres in Tokyo, a thirty-one-year-old Chinese sprinter standing 1.72 metres tall reached the 60-metre mark faster than the split has ever been measured in a 100-metre race: 6.29 seconds. He crossed the line in 9.83, an Asian record, and became the first Chinese athlete to qualify for an Olympic 100-metre final. He finished sixth in that final an hour and a half later. Su Bingtian's career has always been like this — a series of barriers broken by a man everyone told, at the start, was the wrong shape for the event.
Guzhen
He was born on 29 August 1989 in Guzhen, a town in the city of Zhongshan in Guangdong province. He was spotted in middle school by a physical education teacher, and then spent years being doubted by the coaches he was sent to, who looked at his height and concluded that a sprinter that short could not compete at the top level. Stride length is the crudest variable in the 100 metres, and Su did not have it.
He joined the Guangdong provincial team under Yuan Guoqiang, who saw something the others had missed: not raw speed but method. Su was analytical about his own running in a way that is unusual among sprinters, most of whom are trained to stop thinking at the gun. That habit is the thread running through everything that followed.
Eugene, 2015
On 30 May 2015, at the Prefontaine Classic in Eugene, Oregon, Su ran 9.99 seconds and became the first Asian-born sprinter in history to break ten seconds for 100 metres. It was a psychological wall as much as a physical one — a mark that had stood for decades as the boundary of what Asian sprinting was assumed capable of.
He backed it up at the World Championships in Beijing that August, reaching the final as the first Asian-born athlete ever to do so and finishing ninth in 10.06. In the same championships China took silver in the 4×100 metres relay, a result that reframed the country's standing in an event it had never contested seriously.
Changing the Foot
The 9.99 could have been a career peak. Instead, at an age when most sprinters are managing decline, Su rebuilt his technique from the ground up under the American coach Randy Huntington. The central change was one that sounds trivial and is not: Huntington had him switch his starting leg from left to right, on the grounds that it matched Su's natural neurological pattern rather than the convention he had been taught.
For a sprinter, the block start is the most deeply grooved motor pattern in the body, laid down over fifteen years of repetition. Reversing it means unlearning everything about the first three steps and rebuilding the acceleration curve of the entire race. Su did it, and the 100-metre pacing improved throughout. In 2018 he ran 6.42 for 60 metres at the World Indoor Championships, which remains his best over the distance.
Tokyo
The Games in Tokyo, held in 2021, produced both the best race of his life and the limits of it. The 9.83 semi-final, with its 6.29 opening 60, was the fastest a man born in Asia had ever run. The final, ninety minutes later, was 9.98 and sixth place.
There was a medal, though it arrived by a longer route. China finished fourth in the 4×100 metres relay; in February 2022, Great Britain's silver-medal team was disqualified, and China was promoted to bronze. The medals were presented on 4 October 2023 in Hangzhou, more than two years after the race was run.
The Professor
Su's second career has run in parallel with the first. He completed a master's degree in international economics and trade at Jinan University in 2017, married Lin Yanfang in October the same year, and in April 2018 was appointed an associate professor in the university's School of Physical Education. The analytical temperament that Yuan Guoqiang noticed in a teenager turned into an academic post while its owner was still running Olympic semi-finals.
He ended a twenty-one-year career after a final 4×100 metres relay at the National Games, saying his body was telling him to pass the baton to younger athletes.
Why Su Is Called a Genius
The claim here is about physical craft and, more unusually, about self-directed technical intelligence — and the distinction matters, because Su was never the most gifted athlete in his races. At 1.72 metres he was giving away stride length to every man in the Tokyo final. What he possessed instead was the fastest acceleration phase ever measured: a 6.29-second opening 60 metres, produced by stride frequency and by a block start rebuilt in his late twenties to fit his own nervous system rather than the textbook. The willingness to make that change is the strongest evidence for the label. Elite sprinters almost never rebuild their start after their mid-twenties; the risk of losing the pattern entirely is enormous, and the payoff is uncertain. Su took the risk on the strength of an argument about his own neurology, and it produced an Asian record at thirty-one.
The counter-case is plain and should be stated. No source calls him a genius. He never won an individual medal at an Olympics or a World Championship — ninth in Beijing, sixth in Tokyo — and his one Olympic medal came through the disqualification of another team, collected two years late. His 9.83 would not have made the podium in a strong final of the previous decade. The insight that transformed him was his coach's, not his own, and the credit belongs partly to Randy Huntington. What Su can claim without qualification is the barrier: he was the first Asian-born man under ten seconds, the first in an Olympic 100-metre final, and the fastest starter ever recorded. Those are historical facts, not honorifics, and they are enough.
Legacy
Su Bingtian's importance is not measured in medals, which is unusual for a sprinter and appropriate for this one. He removed a ceiling that Asian athletics had accepted as a physical fact, and he did it while being visibly the wrong size for the job, which made the demonstration harder to dismiss. A generation of Chinese sprinters now trains without the assumption that ten seconds is the boundary of the possible.
He lectures at Jinan University. Somewhere in the coaching literature is the note that the fastest 60 metres ever run was produced by a man who, at twenty-seven, agreed to learn how to start again.
