Between 2008 and 2011, he served as an adjunct professor of neurological surgery at the University of California, San Francisco. In 2016, he established the Center for Human-Compatible Artificial Intelligence to address control problems within the field.

Russell has taken a prominent role in warning against the dangers of unregulated AI development, particularly autonomous weapons. He contributed to the 2017 project Slaughterbots and served as a speaker for the 2021 BBC Reith Lectures.
