Early Development and Founding
Steve Huffman began programming at age eight in Warrenton, Virginia. After graduating from the Wakefield School in 2001, he attended the University of Virginia. During his senior year, he and roommate Alexis Ohanian traveled to Boston to meet Paul Graham, securing entry into the first Y Combinator class. Huffman wrote the entire initial Reddit site using the Lisp programming language. By August 2005, the platform achieved sufficient organic traffic that Huffman no longer needed to manually populate the front page with content.

Condé Nast purchased Reddit in October 2006 for a reported sum between $10 million and $20 million. Huffman remained with the organization until 2009. Following his departure, he spent time backpacking in Costa Rica before co-founding the airfare search engine Hipmunk in 2010. Serving as CTO, he helped build the travel site until its eventual closure in 2020.
Returning to Leadership
Huffman returned to Reddit as CEO in July 2015, following the resignation of Ellen Pao. His primary objectives included developing mobile applications for iOS and Android, implementing A/B testing infrastructure, and fixing the existing mobile website. Under his leadership, the company initiated a site-wide visual redesign in April 2018 to move away from an aesthetic he described as a dystopian Craigslist. Throughout his tenure, he has introduced stricter content guidelines, including the prohibition of content inciting violence and the quarantine of potentially offensive material.
