Stephen Daldry entered the film industry following extensive experience in British theatre, directing major productions at the Royal Court Theatre and the Gate Theatre. Early Training and Theatrical Foundations
Born in Dorset in 1961, Daldry attended Richard Huish College before studying English at the University of Sheffield. During his university years, he served as chairman of the Sheffield University Theatre Group. Following graduation, he spent time in Italy as an apprentice to a clown. He subsequently undertook postgraduate training at the East 15 Acting School, now affiliated with the University of Essex.

Daldry began his professional trajectory as an apprentice at the Sheffield Crucible between 1985 and 1988. He held artistic director positions at the Metro Theatre Company and London's Gate Theatre. From 1992 to 1998, he served as artistic director of the Royal Court Theatre, where he oversaw a major development scheme. His directorial work spans numerous productions, including An Inspector Calls, The Inheritance, and The Audience.
Transition to Film and Television
His feature film debut, Billy Elliot, launched the career of Jamie Bell. He later directed The Hours and The Reader, both receiving Academy Award recognition. In television, he directed and produced the series The Crown for Netflix, earning Primetime Emmy Awards for his work. He was also a consulting producer for the Obi-Wan Kenobi limited series.
Current Projects
Daldry remains active in both film and theatre. He collaborated with Sonia Friedman to develop the stage production Stranger Things: The First Shadow, which premiered at the Phoenix Theatre in December 2023. Additionally, he maintains board positions at the Young and Old Vic Theatres and continues to serve as an associate director of the Royal Court Theatre.
