He argued that principles serve as external natural laws, while values are internal and subjective, with the former dictating the ultimate consequences of human behavior. His 1970 work, Spiritual Roots of Human Relations, published by the Deseret Book Company, provided the foundational framework for his later, more secularized success.
Career and Contributions
Beyond his writing, Covey maintained an active career in higher education. He served as a professor at Brigham Young University, where he helped establish the Master of Organizational Behavior program and worked as an assistant to the university president. Later in his life, he held the Huntsman Presidential Chair at Utah State University. In 1996, Time magazine recognized his influence by naming him one of the 25 most influential people.
Legacy and Final Projects
In his later career, Covey expanded his reach into educational reform with the 2008 release of The Leader in Me. This project documented how schools, including A.B. Combs Elementary in Raleigh, North Carolina, integrated his leadership habits into their curricula. Following a cycling accident in Rock Canyon Park, Provo, in April 2012, Covey passed away in Idaho Falls on July 16, 2012. He was buried in Millcreek.
