Medical Foundation
Karczewski completed his secondary education at XLI Liceum Ogólnokształcące im. Joachima Lelewela in Warsaw before enrolling at the Medical University of Warsaw. He earned his medical degree in 1981, subsequently acquiring a second specialization in general surgery. His clinical career began the same year at the district hospital in Nowe Miasto nad Pilicą, where he held roles as the assistant director of the emergency department, hospital director, and eventually the head of the Department of Surgery. He holds memberships in the Association of Polish Surgeons and the Society of Surgeons.

His entry into public administration began with service in the Grójec County local government from 1998 to 2002, followed by a tenure as a councilor for the regional council of Mazovia until 2005. In the 2005 parliamentary elections, he secured a Senate seat representing the Law and Justice party in the Radom district. His parliamentary influence expanded significantly as he secured re-election in 2011 and 2015.
Senate Leadership
Karczewski assumed the position of Deputy Marshal of the Senate on 9 November 2011, serving in that capacity for four years. On 12 November 2015, he was elected Marshal of the Senate, a role he fulfilled for a full term until 12 November 2019. Upon the conclusion of his term as Marshal, he returned to the position of Deputy Marshal until his resignation on 13 May 2020, at which point he was succeeded by Marek Pęk.
Distinctions
His international engagements have been recognized through several state awards. In 2018, he received the Grand Cross of the Order of Merit of Hungary. The following year, he was awarded the Knight Grand Cross of the Order for Merits to Lithuania and the Medal Za Zasługi dla Polaków w Kazachstanie.
