Sonia Rykiel gained international prominence after her shrunken, high-cut sweater design, eventually dubbed the Poor Boy Sweater, appeared on the cover of French Elle magazine. This practical garment, conceived out of personal necessity during pregnancy in 1962, propelled her career as a designer and established her presence within the competitive landscape of the Parisian fashion industry.
Early Career and Boutique Foundations
Born Sonia Flis in 1930 in the 14th arrondissement of Paris, she began her professional life in 1948 by dressing window displays for the Grande Maison de Blanc. Following her 1953 marriage to Sam Rykiel, the owner of a boutique called Laura, she transitioned into design. By 1965, she co-founded the Sonia Rykiel Company with her husband and opened her first boutique on the Left Bank in 1968. Her approach to fashion challenged traditional norms, as she famously utilized unfinished hems, placed seams on the garment exterior, and incorporated slogans into her knitwear.
