Sonia Gandhi

Sonia Gandhi entered Indian politics in 1997, years after the death of her husband, Rajiv Gandhi. As the long-term president of the Indian National Congress, she steered the party through multiple election cycles and served as a central figure in the governance of the nation while balancing a public life that began in Italy.

Background and Early Education

Born in 1946 in the village of Lusiana, Italy, Sonia Maino was raised within a Roman Catholic family. She spent her youth in Orbassano and attended local schools before moving to England. While enrolled at a language school in Cambridge in 1965, she met Rajiv Gandhi. The pair married in 1968, leading to her permanent relocation to India to reside with her mother-in-law, then-Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. During these years, she remained largely removed from the public eye.

Rise to Political Leadership

Following the assassination of her husband, Gandhi initially resisted invitations to enter the political sphere. She eventually joined the Congress party in 1997 and assumed the role of president in 1998, a position she held until 2017. Between 1998 and 2004, she served as the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha. Under her leadership, the party formed the government following the 2004 general elections and established the United Progressive Alliance.

Legislative Influence and Tenure

Gandhi declined the position of Prime Minister following the 2004 electoral victory, choosing instead to lead the ruling coalition and the National Advisory Council. Her tenure involved overseeing various welfare schemes and development policies. In 2019, she returned to the presidency of the Congress party as an interim leader, serving until 2022. She has been a member of the 13th, 16th, and 17th Lok Sabha, and in 2024, she became a member of the Rajya Sabha.
