Born in 1987 in Mumbai, Sonakshi Sinha is the daughter of actors Shatrughan and Poonam Sinha. She attended Arya Vidya Mandir before pursuing higher education at the Premlila Vithaldas Polytechnic, part of SNDT Women's University. Her initial professional interest lay in costume design, which led her to design garments for the 2005 production Mera Dil Leke Dekho.

Sinha gained significant recognition following her performance in the 2010 action film Dabangg, which secured her a Filmfare Award for Best Female Debut. In preparation for the role, she underwent a physical transformation, losing 30 kilograms. Throughout the early 2010s, she appeared in multiple high-grossing films, including Rowdy Rathore, Son of Sardaar, and the sequel Dabangg 2, often working alongside established stars like Akshay Kumar and Salman Khan.

While frequently cast in action films, Sinha received critical praise for her dramatic performance in the 2013 film Lootera, portraying a woman struggling with tuberculosis. This role earned her a nomination for the Filmfare Award for Best Actress. Later in her career, she expanded her scope beyond traditional cinema by starring in the 2023 Amazon Prime series Dahaad and the 2024 Netflix period drama Heeramandi, the former of which resulted in a Filmfare OTT Award.

Beyond her film roles, Sinha has contributed to television as a judge on the dance show Nach Baliye in 2017.
