Securing the title role of the NBC sitcom Punky Brewster in 1984, Soleil Moon Frye began her career at age seven after beating out more than 3,000 other girls during an audition process. The character became a significant figure for young children despite the series facing consistent ratings challenges against established competitors during its initial prime-time run.
Television and Acting Career
Before landing her breakout role, Frye appeared in television movies including Missing Children: A Mother's Story, Who Will Love My Children?, and Ernie Kovacs: Between the Laughter. Following the conclusion of the original Punky Brewster series in 1988, she moved into guest roles on series such as The Wonder Years and Friends. From 2000 to 2003, she portrayed Roxie King on The WB sitcom Sabrina the Teenage Witch. Her voice acting career features roles in The Proud Family, Planet Sheen, and various Bratz productions.

Frye expanded into directing after attending The New School in New York. Her debut film, Wild Horses, was released in 1998. She directed the documentary Sonny Boy in 2004, which followed a trip with her father, Virgil Frye, who was suffering from Alzheimer's disease. In 2021, she released the documentary Kid 90, featuring archival footage from the 1990s, with Leonardo DiCaprio serving as an executive producer.
Business and Writing Ventures
Beyond entertainment, Frye co-owned The Little Seed, an eco-friendly boutique for children in Los Angeles, from 2008 until 2012. Her literary work includes the 2011 book Happy Chaos: From Punky to Parenting and My Perfectly Imperfect Adventures in Between. She also hosted the television program Home Made Simple on the Oprah Winfrey Network between 2013 and 2014.
